One presidential hopeful is awfully superstitious. Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum wore a sweater vest a few weeks ago at Mike Huckabee's anti-abortion forum for the GOP presidential candidates in Iowa and then saw a rise in poll numbers. He's been wearing the same "lucky sweater vest" ever since. Forget discussing the issues-Santorum thinks his vest is crucial to winning the republican nomination.
"That speech went over very, very well," Santorum told radio host Laura Ingraham. " If there was one event that really began the moment, it was that speech. And I think most people recognized that here, so all the sudden the sweater vest was like, 'Fear the vest." He told the New York Times, "It sort of took on a life of its own. So I started wearing more and more. My staff bought me a bunch more." Apparently most of his sweater vests come from JoS. A. Bank, but he also likes the ones from Brooks Brothers.
There's now a Twitter feed called @FearRicksVest, a Facebook page, a website, and a video called "Sleeves Slow Me Down" paying tribute to the man in the vest through corny phrases like "Rick is getting ready to inVEST in you & America." If Santorum goes farther in the election it will be interesting to see if he ever makes a public appearance without the vest!
Lots of celebrities and athletes have funny superstitions and good luck charms we tried to round up as many as we can. Check out this heft list below:
Cameron Diaz has several lucky charms including a necklace given to her by a friend that's supposed to ward off the effects of aging.
Cate Blanchett had her "Lord of the Ring" elf ears bronzed and keeps them on her mantle for good luck.
Michael Jordan wore a pair of shorts from his alma mater, University of North Carolina, underneath his Chicago Bulls uniform for every professional game.
Jessica Alba asked those who attended her wedding shower to wear a leather bracelet she gave them and not remove it until after her baby, Honor, was born.
Pete Wentz finds comfort in the Count from "Sesame Street" when flying. He once wrote on his blog, "anytime you see me in an airport...He's on the bag or on a shirt...The Count is like my lucky socks. My 'knock on wood.' I'm worried when he's not there."
Tiger Woods wears red shirts on the final day of tournaments because the color is lucky in his mother's Thai culture.
Serena Williams always brings her shower sandals to the tennis court, checks her shoelaces and bounces the ball five times before playing. She also wears the same pair of socks for the duration of a tournament she's winning, and says losses have come from not following this routine.
Brad Pitt wears a shark tooth necklace to protect him from danger.
Michelle Kwan always wears a gold dragon pendant from her grandmother during figure skating competitions.
David Beckham supposedly wears new soccer cleats and Emporio Armani underwear to each game.
Heidi Klum thinks shamrocks are lucky and even designed a line of jewelry with four-leaf clover designs in 2006. She was later sued by Van Cleef and Arpels for ripping off their design, so perhaps they're not so lucky after all.
Patrick Dempsey brings his lucky red Puma sneakers everywhere he travels.
And last but not least, former Yankee and current Colorado Rockies first baseman, Jason Giambi, said he wears a lucky thong when his batting average drops. Supposedly it works so well that other teammates have asked to borrow it. Ew.
Do you wear a special item for good luck?
